Auditory Gorilla

This page contains material relating to our Auditory Gorilla experiment (Dalton & Fraenkel, 2012). We’ve put these up for demonstration purposes so that interested individuals can listen to the stimuli we used in the experiment, but we’d request that the audio files on this page should not be downloaded, distributed or used for any other purpose without our permission. If you have any questions about the contents of this page, please feel free to contact us here. Thanks.

Online Demonstration Version

The video above is a slightly edited version of the full experiment, for demonstration purposes. The full version of the experiment repeated the scene a second time, and contained prompts at several points to answer questions about the scene. In the experiment, the screen was completely blank while participants listened to the scene.

The Binaural Scene

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

On the player above you can listen to the binaural recording that we used in the experiment. The first time you listen to it, try to follow the women’s conversation and ignore the men. Then listen again, this time paying attention to what the men are saying. NB. It is essential that you listen to this recording on headphones in order to experience the binaural effect.
