Dr. Saalmann studies sensory and higher cognitive processing, focusing on how brain areas interact.

Research interests

§         How we learn patterns and rules, using fMRI to investigate the connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and subcortical brain areas in humans.

§         The neural mechanisms of attention, measuring the activity of multiple neurons simultaneously to examine the interactions between the parietal and visual cortices of nonhuman primates.

§         Visual processing, characterizing koniocellular neurons in the thalamus.

§         Synaptic plasticity, particularly the role of brain steroids in learning and pathology.
